POLICE BOARD TO MEET THURSDAY

Toronto: The next scheduled meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board will take place on Thursday October 19 at 1:30 PM. Please note that this meeting will not take place at Police Headquarters but will instead take place in Committee Room 2 at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West. Copies of the agenda are available on the Board’s website www.torontopoliceboard.on.ca, from the Board office and limited copies are available at the meeting. Items of interest include:

UPDATE ON TAVIS
The Board will be given a presentation by the Chief on the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS). This strategy was implemented city-wide in January 2006 and is designed to reduce violence in Toronto through the deployment of neighbourhood officers at the local divisional level and other measures.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY CONCERNS
The Board will be given a presentation regarding pedestrian safety concerns in Toronto. The report was written in response to the Chair’s concerns about the number of pedestrian fatalities thus far in 2006, a marked increase from the same time last year.

CAPITAL BUDGET REQUEST
The Board will consider a report from the Chief regarding the 2007-2011 Capital Budget request. The request, which totals $36.3M, includes facility projects, information technology projects and replacement/maintenance/equipment projects. Notable initiatives include the new training facility, the in-car camera project and the radio replacement project.

OPERATING BUDGET VARIANCE REPORT
The Board will consider a report from the Chief regarding the 2006 operating budget variance for the Toronto Police Service as of August 31, 2006. As of this date, a favourable variance of $1.5M is projected, due, in large part, to lower salary and benefit expenditures and higher grant funding than expected.

STAFFING STRATEGY UPDATE
The Board will consider a report from the Chief regarding an update on the staffing strategy. The update indicates that for January 2007, there is a projected deployed strength of 5523, which exceeds the target strength of 5510.

POLICY ON COMMUNITY CONSULTATIVE GROUPS
The Board will consider a report from the Chief regarding the implementation of the Board policy on community consultation groups. In response to the policy, the Service has addressed issues related to composition, role, processes, effectiveness, resources and support.
