For immediate release May 14, 2012 Police Board to meet on Friday at City Hall TORONTO: The next scheduled meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board will take place on Friday May 18 at 1:30 PM. Please note that the meeting will not take place at Police Headquarters but, instead, will take place at Toronto City Hall, Committee Room 2. Copies of the agenda are available on the Board’s website, from the Board office and limited copies are available at the meeting. Items of interest include: PRESENTATION – POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR AWARDS The Board will hear a presentation from Mr. Christopher Worth, from the Police Officer of the Year Awards, Toronto Board of Trade. The 45th Annual Police Officer of the Year Awards will take place on June 6, 2012 and will pay tribute to Service members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make Toronto one of the safest cities in the world. PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS REPORTS The Board will hear a presentation and consider a report from the Chief, deferred from the April meeting, regarding the Professional Standards Semi-Annual Report for the period of January to June 2011. The Board will also hear a presentation and consider a report with respect to the 2011 Professional Standards Annual Report. These reports include information on public complaints, civil litigation, charges laid under the Police Services Act, use of force incidents, SIU cases, and suspect apprehension pursuits, as well as awards given to Service members. JUDICIAL COMMENTS REGARDING POLICE MISCONDUCT The Board will consider a report from the Chair with respect to the issue of judicial comments regarding police misconduct. The report discusses a recent media series that raised concerns with respect to the issue. The report recommends that the Board communicate to the Ministry of the Attorney General its support for the review announced by Attorney General Gerretsen. 2011 CONDUCTED ENERGY WEAPONS ANNUAL REPORT The Board will consider a report from the Chief with respect to the 2011 Annual Report regarding the use of Conducted Energy Weapons (CEWs). This report summarizes the frequency and nature of CEW use by the Toronto Police Service. In 2011, the weapon was used 248 times during 222 incidents involving as many as 290 subjects.
