Monday February 13, 2006
Toronto: The next scheduled meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board will take place on Wednesday February 15 at 1:30 PM. Please note that this meeting will not take place at Police Headquarters but will instead take place in Committee Room 1 at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West. Copies of the agenda are available on the Board’s website www.torontopoliceboard.on.ca, from the Board office and limited copies are available at the meeting. Items of interest include:
“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” Working Group
The Board will consider a report from the Chair regarding the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” Working Group which recommends the adoption of a “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy. The rationale of such a policy is to ensure that non-documented immigrants who are victims of violence, such as women and children, and witnesses to crimes, have equal access to law enforcement services without the fear that contact with the police and other authorities will lead to inquiries about their immigration status. The Board will also hear deputations from a number of individuals on this subject.
2005 Hate/Bias Crime Report
The Board will hear a presentation from the Service on the results of the 2005 Hate/Bias Crime Statistical Report. In 2005, there was a decrease in the total number of reported hate crimes for the City of Toronto, although, as the report explains, the lower number of reported occurrences can be somewhat misleading. The comprehensive report includes many topics, including patterns of hate motivated offences, locations of offences and education and community outreach initiatives in this area.
Exchange Program between the Toronto Police Service and the Jamaica Constabulary Force
The Board will hear an update from the Chief on the development of an exchange program between the Toronto Police Service and the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
Fiftieth Anniversary of the Toronto Police Services Board
The Board will consider a report from the Chair regarding the 50th Anniversary of the Toronto Police Services Board, which will take place in May of this year. The report recommends a one-day conference as well as a banquet to observe this important event and to recognize the importance of the civilian oversight of policing.
