POLICE BOARD TO MEET ON THURSDAY

TORONTO: The next scheduled meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board will take place on Thursday March 27 at 1:30 PM in the Auditorium, 40 College Street. Copies of the agenda are available on the Boards website, www.tpsb.ca, from the Board office, and limited copies are available at the meeting. Items of interest include:
PRESENTATION YOUTH IN POLICING INITIATIVE (YIPI)
The Board will hear a presentation on the results of the 2007 Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI), an innovative summer employment program that places youth in positions across the Toronto Police Service. This initiative has had many positive results it has enhanced the relationship between youth and police, it has provided young people with meaningful work and it has taught them important job skills.
PRESENTATION 2007 HATE/BIAS CRIME STATISTICAL REPORT
The Board will hear a presentation and consider a report from the Chief regarding the 2007 Hate/Bias Crime Statistical Report. The report demonstrates that in the past year, a number of important community partnerships were made and strengthened and provides details about the Anti-Black Hate Crimes Committee that was created. In 2007, there was an overall reduction of reported hate/bias crimes, with 130 hate/bias crimes recorded in 2007, the lowest number recorded since the Hate Crime Unit began collecting this data in 1993.
MOBILE CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM (MCIT) PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SCARBOROUGH HOSPITAL
The Board will consider a report from the Chief recommending approval of an agreement with The Scarborough Hospital for the Mobile Crisis Intervention Team (MCIT), a community response team which partners representatives from the hospital and from the Service to improve the response and provision of services to emotionally disturbed persons in the community. This agreement represents an expansion of the successful MCIT program, which currently is in operation in 51, 52, 11 and 14 Divisions.
TASERS ANNUAL REPORT
The Board will consider the 2007 Annual Report regarding Tasers from the Chief. This annual report addresses such issues as training, incidents of Taser deployment, injuries, civil actions and location of incidents. The report indicates that in 2007, the Taser was deployed 404 times; of this total, the Taser was fully deployed 187 times. In 2007, there was one incident that resulted in serious injury to the subject, when an officer acted to prevent further harm. In 2007, there were no deaths attributable to the use of a Taser.
REVISED TORONTO POLICE SERVICE OPERATING BUDGET REQUEST
The Board will consider a report from the Chief recommending that the Board approve a revised 2008 net operating budget request of $798.3M, a $12M or 1.5% increase over the 2007 approved net operating budget, excluding the impact of 2008 labour contract settlements. This revised budget request has been reduced by $3.0M from the budget approved by the Board at its special meeting on February 25, 2008.
